What People are Saying

"I am incredibly thankful that Youth Apprenticeship Program (YAP) has been funding DYSL to be able to provide students, like me, the opportunity to be introduced to the working world without compromising schoolwork and extracurricular activities. I am an academically-inclined student, participating in competitive volleyball among other sports, and involved in school and community volunteering. The DYSL staff has been extremely understanding, flexible, and supportive with allowing me to balance these activities. They have largely contributed to my becoming a better-rounded person. I volunteered at the thrift store, modeled in the first annual fashion show, have been offered to be on the Board of Directors as a Honourary Youth Member, and worked at the thrift store as part of YAP. The organization, staff, and volunteers have established a healthy and positive learning environment which is enjoyable to work in. Each and every person I have encountered there has taught me something important, whether it be time management, interpersonal skills, or how to void on the register. Through DYSL, I am able to give back to my community, and learn valuable and transferable skills that will advance both my academic and career goals. Being a member of the DYSL family has helped me with university acceptances and scholarship awards. DYSL’s supportive network with Delta’s youth has been an inspiration and, one day, I hope to give back to DYSL as much as they have given me."

"I have been working at DYSL for 6 months. Over this period of time I have been impacted positively in many ways. First off, the staff at DYSL welcomed me warmly from the beginning, if you are ever in need of someone to talk to, or to cheer you up the volunteers and staff at DYSL will always be there. They have taught me so much about giving to others and many other things that will take me far in life. The thing about the YAP is that I get to get paid while working and enjoying my work. Not once have I dreaded going to work like most people my age, I look forward to it. Since I am in grade 11 it is great that I am able to be paid so that I can save for post secondary schooling. Being a youth apprentice has given me confidence in my leadership abilities, sometimes I am a team leader and I instruct some of the volunteers on tasks that need to be done to help the store out. During this I have learned to work with different personalities to get the job done to the best of our abilities. Working with a range of people I have developed problem solving traits to deal with different conflicts. The YAP has given me a chance to help at an amazing place like DYSL and if it weren’t for the YAP I wouldn’t have had the chance to meet so many amazing people, learn a lot about myself, and learn so many important skills for the future."

"I have been in the DYSL Youth Apprenticeship Program (YAP) program for the past year and a half. The opportunity that was given to me to practice leadership, time management and a variety of merchandising skills are just a few of the valuable experiences I have been fortunate to learn. One of the greatest skills has been learning people skills. By working with so many different personalities, nationalities and ethnicities, I am constantly challenged to learn social skills that will be valuable both for short and long term. Without this opportunity from DYSL, I would have missed out on many wonderful changes to enrich my life. YAP should continue to fund students because the experience is life changing, and has the ability to impact multiple aspects of life and future job skills. The skills that I have acquired I am also able to utilize in school, for example, people skills and organizational skills. Personally I think that if people are able to benefit from this program as much as I have many students will be positively impacted in many ways. Communities will continue to benefit from this inspiring program as well as the students."

"The students are so grateful to DYSL for your funding to allow them to expand their leadership skills. Your programs allow them to think outside the box."

"We customers enjoy having students assist us in the thrift store and know they are learning skills that will last a lifetime. They are always polite and very helpful. We also like them in their DYSL blue & green t-shirts."

"I am grateful to have had the opportunity to serve with DYSL as an Honourary Junior Board member while in my senior year at DSS high school. It was a wonderful experience that introduced me to the “behind the scenes” work of a charity organization and of DYSL’s role in the community. I have experienced firsthand how they positively change the lives of the members of the community and the common love they share for helping people. I am now more than happy to continue my service with this wonderful Board of Directors as a regular Director on the Board."

“Volunteering at DYSL has taught me many skills and has given me the confidence I needed to thrive in the working world and at home. Some of the many skills I learned was people skills, time management, customer service and being honest. Since I started my confidence level has gone through the roof! If you want to have fun and support youth, volunteer with DYSL, you won’t forget it. It is one of the best choices I have made. Thank you to everyone at DYSL!“

“I have volunteered with DYSL at the thrift store from the beginning in 2003 and saw it grow into a broader charity for kids helping kids with mental disabilities and all others. Volunteering had an enormous influence on me because of the kind and compassionate people at DYSL and the kind volunteers. I grew up DYSL! Their programs helped me a lot and I am very thankful to them. I have moved out of Tsawwassen, but still visit them whenever I can, because of my good memories.”

“Throughout my schooling thus far, I have faced many challenges from both without and within. Going through test after test in Grade 12, and always struggling to focus, I have faced so many challenges but thanks to involved and supportive parents and teachers and DYSL, I feel I have been very lucky to have such a web of support. Thanks to the entire DYSL team for what you do for young people in Delta.”

“The DYSL organization has been a continual source of support and encouragement for students. When they approached us regarding funding to each high school in Delta (7 of them), the students felt recognized and supported. The funding and hands-on support enhanced the students’ ability to create meaningful events, learn leadership skills and campaign experiences. None of the events would have been possible without the funding and support from DYSL. In each event, DYSL has been the foundation for students to realize their dreams to create meaningful events relevant to their causes and audiences. Their work as a partner encourages so many young people to tackle greater challenges to serve and positively influence our community.”

“I would like to voice the positive impact that the family of DYSL offered and instilled in me. As a high school student, I learned the importance of positive communication, team work, hard work and helping others, and that helped ME to expand my horizons. Thanks to my great experiences at DYSL, and at their thrift store, I was able to help my community and obtain a sense of self worth and learn from all the wonderful people that make up DYSL. Thank you for letting me be a part of this great organization”.
