Wanted: Adult & Youth Volunteers


WE NEED YOU to join our DYSL family and volunteer at our Thrift Store in Tsawwassen. YOUth between the ages of 14 - 25 are encouraged to apply. The DYSL 'WearHouse' Thrift Store will operate 7 days a week June – August (Mon-Saturday 10-5; Sun 12-5. Examples of jobs at the WearHouse are: sorters, pricers, cashiers, social media assistants, fashion show event assistants, display coordinators, and lot's more. Learn to do one, or all, and have fun doing it! 

We will provide mentorship, employment skills, references to post secondary institutions & employers, credit hours for grad transitions. Our volunteers receive a discount on merchandise as do students with ID.

Youth in Delta are conscious of their civic footprint and looking for opportunities to learn, lead and grow. Delta Youth Support Link Society exists to empower youth to live their lives to their fullest potential. We do this by providing funding to secondary schools and community groups to encourage youth in Delta to engage in leadership, social justice and environmental activities in their school community as well as the community at large. This year we funded youth initiated projects in high schools in South and North Delta to develop leadership, empowerment and volunteerism.

Part Time Assistant Thrift Store Manager

Join our Crew! Our thrift store has an opening for a Store Manager in the South Delta area. Mature youth with supervision & retail experience up to the age of 25 are encouraged to apply!! We are committed to scheduling shifts around post-secondary studies. Our thrift store makes a difference by helping to raise funds for Delta youth, local non-profit partners and providing meaningful employment opportunities for youth.

We remain committed to recycling and keeping product out of landfills and providing an affordable shopping alternative to mainstream retail. Our main goal is to provide excellent service and product to our shoppers, as well as keep our retail floor clean, bright and organized.

Essential Functions:
-Staff building, employee relations and employee development
-Customer relations
-Safety and store maintenance
-Volunteer Coordination & Support
-Financial responsibility – daily cash reconciliation
-Executive and administrative responsibility
-Strong sense of self-awareness and integrity
-Supervisory responsibility of staff & volunteers

Qualifications:
Education: High School Completion; College level studies preferred
Computer Skills: Microsoft Word
Social Media: Experience with twitter, facebook & Instagram preferred
Retail Experience: 1 year minimum working at an assistant or manager capacity
General Practical Knowledge: pricing of household goods and clothing - both new and used.
Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze and interpret policies, employee handbooks, and write reports.
Communication Skills: must have the ability to cordially respond to common inquiries in person and by phone from customers, employees, administrative staff and vendors.
****Relevant Criminal Record Clearance is mandatory.

Physical Demands:
16+/hour work week, standing, walking, pushing, pulling & bending.

Our Assistant Store Manager is highly visible, self-aware and professional. Our Assistant Store Manager is a connector with a positive attitude and excellent team leader.

 Youth Apprenticeship Program ~ Retail

Closing Date: January 15, 2015
Term: February 1 – May 31, 2015

Summary: Within the context of the Youth Apprenticeship Program the Thrift Store Sales Apprentice performs a wide variety of duties under the direction of the Thrift Store Manager to ensure an effective and profitable operation of the store.  The sales associate is responsible for providing prompt, courteous, and knowledgeable service to customers. Duties include receiving donations, processing and displaying merchandise, operating cash register, and completing sales transactions.

 

Goals of Guiding Values of YAP:

  1. To improve services, leadership supports and employment outcomes for youth in Delta.
  2. To keep youth’s well-being at the center of our initiatives, while maintaining a high operational standard.
  3. To engage youth in the journey towards improving leadership outcomes.

Key Outcomes for YAP:

 

A.  General
Maintain current knowledge of and complies with Delta Youth Support Link Society mission, vision, policies, procedures and standards of practice.
Maintain confidentiality of information gained as a result of employment with the agency.
Abide by Delta Youth Support Link Society's code of ethics & employee policies.

 

B.  Store Operations and Donations Processing
Cross-train and work in all areas of the Thrift Store as needed.
Effectively handle cash register and sales transactions and opening/closing procedures.
Sort and Price donations according to established guidelines and practices.
Ensure stock is rotated regularly and merchandise is organized and displayed to maximize sales.
Assist in receiving, inspecting, testing, cleaning, and distributing donations. Refuse goods if necessary in a respectful manner.
Maintain a clean, tidy and organized store.
Ensure informative and promotional signing is accurate and current.

 

C.  Customer Service and Staff Relations
Represent DYSL in a professional and courteous manner at all times.
Provide quality service to customers.
Maintain good employee and volunteer relations by working together as a team.
Develop ongoing communications with the Store Manager on any issues/concerns, store operations and policies.
Attend and participates in staff meetings as assigned.

 

D.  Health, Safety and Security
Maintain a safe and secure working area for employees and customers by ensuring aisles are clear of clutter and garbage.
Responsible to help secure the premises.
Follow all safety guidelines to ensure a safe work environment.
Take immediate action to address any safety concern or noncompliance of safety rules.
Adhere to loss prevention processes and policies.

 

E.  Additional Responsibilities
Assist customers with purchases to their vehicles
Help load and unload vehicles when necessary
Pick up donations and garbage left outside store premises.

 

F.  Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director, Program Manager &/or Store Managers.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Be multi task oriented and organized
Physically fit with the ability to properly lift heavy items up to 0 pounds with assistance.
Ability to stand for long periods of time.
Current Delta resident &/or High school student
Ability to work independently and take initiative.

Wages: $10.25 per hour
